Asbestos fibers are present everywhere in the air at very low levels. This means that everyone is breathing in a very low level of fibers all the time. The small burden of fibers resulting from this background exposure appears to be well tolerated, so the theory that one asbestos fiber kills is unfounded. Diseases caused by asbestos are work related. Plumbers, builders, electricians, and central heating engineers are those most at risk.
